Stolen Laptop
Case Summary:
The Defendant was charged with a single count of theft 2. The charge arose because the Defendant's previous employer accused him of stealing a company provided laptop. When the laptop was not returned timely the Defendant was cited/arrest for theft. Ultimately, the case was dismissed through a civil compromise.
Attorney Comments:
"My client had been provided a laptop from his employer. He commonly took the laptop home to do work, which was something he was expected to do. The employer terminated defendant's employment and demanded the return of the laptop. Before my client could return the laptop his car was broken into and the laptop was stolen. The report of theft and the break in was reported to law enforcement. However, my client was still charged with the theft of the laptop even though he was not the responsible party. Although I felt this case was defensible the prosecutor was agreeable to a civil compromise (e.g. Defendant paid employer the value of the laptop) and so the case was dismissed."
